Telethon Kids – Supporting Family Conversations
Script Writing | Storyboarding | Illustrations | Character Design | Animations
The Perth based Telethon Kids Institute are in the business of bringing together community, practitioners, policy makers and funders to improve the health, development and lives of young people through excellence in research.
Their research program around educating parents to help shape their children’s view and relationship with alcohol, was one in a series named “Supporting Family Conversations”, and they needed and ‘explainer’ animation video to assist with breaking it down in to easily digestable information.
The animation piece was built around messages about setting expectations, maintaining close relationships and talking early and often about the dangers of alcohol to our kids, and how formulating a game plan can play an integral part in the ongoing positive education of our kids and their attitude towards it.
Our process always starts with formulating further visual ideas that align with the script provided in order to bring it to life, and in some cases, contributing suggestions around script improvement.
With those ideas in hand, we then set about crafting a storyboard for the duration of the clip that marries the visuals to the script in a far more detailed fashion to get agreement from all the stakeholders before the animation process starts.
In order to set the pace of the animation, it’s important that we have the Voice Over recorded and in hand prior to animating, so decisions need to be made around a male or female read, their age group and tone, prior to engaging the right voice over for the job.
Establishing an illustration style for the clip is also integral, so everyone knows how playful or sophisticated the final clip will be and how much detail is required in our characters and their environments.
With all these decisions made, the animation process can finally begin, and with an end result that captures the exact essence of the Telethon Kids Institutes vision, it’s no wonder they’ve become repeat clients of Flying Pigs Creative.
