Plastic Free Wollongong has a mission of ‘educating, inspiring and empowering the Illawarra to reduce single-use plastic for a cleaner more sustainable future’. With a variety of community events and a strong local presence, Wollongong City Council invited Flying Pigs to submit a response to a closed tender for the design of four outdoor banners for Plastic Free Wollongong to educate the local community about the dangers of single use plastic.
Provided with the existing copy that used humour and a play on words, our creative approach was to create illustrations of sea creatures using different single-use plastics. The use of juxtaposition and humour would create an emotional connection with viewers, bringing attention to the serious impact of single-use plastic on sea wildlife and the environment in a clever and non-confrontational way. The bespoke, hand drawn illustrations are visually impactful, and flexible enough to be used across a variety of communication channels.Â
